Who we are

The Association for the Protection of the Environment (A.P.E.) is an Egyptian non-governmental organisation established in 1984 and registered with the Ministry of Social Affairs under license number 3255.

As a non-governmental organization, an 11-person volunteer board oversees A.P.E. Members of the board, who come from outside the settlement, are selected based on their expertise in areas such as business, government, community development, agriculture, and engineering, as well as their commitment to working with these underprivileged communities.

The Board of Directors sets the direction and policies for the organization, in consultation with volunteer experts. The board is currently chaired by Mrs. Syada Alhamy Greiss, a member of the Egyptian parliament, with Dr. Salah El Haggar, Professor of Power and the Environment at AUC, as Vice President. The founder of A.P.E is Mrs. Yousriya Loza Sawiris, a qualified accountant and financial auditor, who remains active on the board.

A.P.E could not function without its general assembly of more than sixty expert volunteers who provide support in areas such as: health, education, the environment, recycling technology, social development, and micro-finance. These dedicated volunteers provide their time and skills in financial management, project design, agriculture, health care, sewing techniques, paper recycling, rug weaving, construction and marketing.

A staff of more than four hundred people runs the day-to-day operations of the organization. As part of its commitment to empowering the local community and providing sustainable solutions, the majorityof A.P.E.’s employees are Zabbaleen community members.
